Punsand Bay to Vrilya Point

We left Punsand Bay today parting ways for a couple of days with John & Lorna.  Our extra travellers, Geoff and Erika left us yesterday so it was now just Michael & Jules and Graham, Jacob and I for a few days.  We will meet up with John in Lorna in Weipa.  First we went for a look at Mutee Head.  It was nearly lunch time when we got there, the sand was extremely soft and we nearly got bogged just on the track in but a little more air out of the tyres saved us from being recovered by a NISSAN!   There was plenty of chatter over the UHF from some fellows who were struggling on the beach.  We pulled up for a look and once out of the air conditioning found another stinking hot day where you couldn’t walk without shoes unless you wanted 3rd degree burns on your feet so while the boys did a couple of repairs Julie and I made lunch.

There was a radar site showing on the GPS so after a little drive around we found it – the boys find this sort of thing interesting :/.

Next we headed for Vrilya Point.  We got there just before sunset and decided to make a run for it up the beach as it was much nicer down at the northern point at the river mouth about 10kms away.  The sand was soft here as well and as we were trying to get there before dark the vehicles got pushed fairly hard.  We pulled up at the point and we were bogged!  I wanted us to try out the max traxs that we’ve never used just to have a go, Michael was ready and rearing to snatch us but after a break chatting to another camper Graham decided to have another go at rocking himself out of the bog and it worked.  Apparently this spot has caught a few people.  His reason for not doing it the easy way – too hot to get out of the vehicle.  Once we got up onto higher ground under some shade he actually stopped and let more air out of the tyres so we could drive around to select a camp spot.  We had no problems after that.

We spent the next day relaxing.  The boys tried to catch some fish but there was nothing around.  It was really hot again today so we put Jacob in a tub of water and we had a splash around.  It cooled me down considerably.  In the late afternoon we went for a drive down the beach to the wreck of a light ship to throw the lines in there.  Jacob had a ball playing around in the edge of the water.
